Confusions and entanglements are the order of the day: the endearingly awkward waiter Leopold is secretly in love with his boss, the landlady Josepha. She, however, has a soft spot for the regular guest Dr. Siedler, who in turn is interested in Ottilie, the daughter of the grumpy industrialist Giesecke, currently embroiled in a dispute with his rival Sigismund Sülzheimer.
