Piano & Forte brings the Haydn Foundation’s summer programme to a close with a meeting between two great protagonists: the piano and the orchestra. At the heart of the programme is Dmitri Shostakovich’s Piano Concerto No. 2, a brilliant and captivating work in which energy, lyricism and irony intertwine in a surprising balance. Composed in a lively style rich in contrasts, the Concerto highlights the dialogue between the soloist and the orchestra, offering moments of great intensity and virtuosity. The evening will be rounded off by Johannes Brahms’ Serenade No. 1, an early work of luminous and refined character, inspired by the tradition of 18th-century light music, yet already marked by the composer’s expressive depth.
