Special Talents – Premio delle Arti

A special concert for extraordinary talents: the winners of the National Arts Prize, who, as part of their award, have the opportunity to perform as soloists alongside the Haydn Orchestra. Cellist Alessandro Sacchetti and double bassist Matteo Spiaggari, born in 2007 and 2004 respectively, will be joined by another young talent: Moldovan conductor Stepan Armasar, winner of the Toscanini Prize in 2025 and currently Associate Conductor of the Concertgebouw Orchestra. A concrete opportunity to bring together talent, training and personal experience, in collaboration with the F. A. Bonporti Conservatory of Music in Trento. The programme features two important works from the repertoire of these two instruments: Joseph Haydn’s Cello Concerto No. 1 in C major and Giovanni Bottesini’s Double Bass Concerto No. 2 in B minor. Composed between 1761 and 1765 but lost until 1961, Haydn’s Cello Concerto No. 1 is among his most lively, cheerful and inventive works. Its brilliant yet natural virtuosity, in dialogue with the orchestra, provides a link to Bottesini’s Double Bass Concerto No. 2. A key figure in the repertoire for the largest of the string instruments, the Cremona-born conductor and composer was so accomplished on the double bass that he was nicknamed “the Paganini of the double bass”. Opening and closing the programme are Mozart’s Symphony No. 22 in C major, composed when he was just 17, and Schubert’s Overture in C major “in the Italian style”.
