Ha studiato alla Juilliard School di New York con Dorothy Delay e poi con Sandor Vegh a Salisburgo. Suona in tutto il mondo con le più prestigiose orchestre, fra cui i Berliner Philharmoniker (dove è stato per sei anni violino di spalla), i Münchner Philharmoniker, la NDR Sinfonieorchester, l’Orchestra Nazionale di S. Cecilia e l’Orchestra Sinfonica di Baltimora, collaborando con importanti direttori fra cui Kirill Petrenko, Vladimir Jurowski, Mariss Jansons, Matthias Pintscher e Markus Stenz. Il suo repertorio spazia da Bach fino alla musica contemporanea: degna di nota è stata la prima mondiale del Concerto di Brett Dean “Electric Preludes” per violino elettrico a sei corde. Sempre più intensa la sua attività di direttore-solista con l’Orchestra Sinfonica di Melbourne, la Mahler Chamber Orchestra, l’Orchestra Filarmonica di Hong Kong, la Dresdner Philharmoniker, la Komische Oper Berlino e l’Orchestra Sinfonica Giuseppe Verdi. Tra le numerose incisioni discografiche sono certamente da ricordare quelle con Claudio Abbado, con cui ha avuto una stretta collaborazione sin dai tempi dei Berliner Philharmoniker e poi con la Lucerne Festival Orchestra. Nel 2013 è stato pubblicato un CD con il Concerto per violino di Schönberg, premiato con il Deutscher Schallplattenpreis nel 2015. Insegna alla Hochschule für Musik di Berlino. Suona lo Stradivari “Tritton” del 1730.
The Haydn Orchestra was founded in 1960 at the initiative of the municipalities and provinces of Bolzano and Trento. Its repertoire ranges from the Baroque to contemporary music. The orchestra has taken part in numerous international festivals, appearing in Austria (in Bregenz, Erl, at the Mozarteum in Salzburg and the Musikverein in Vienna), Germany, Japan, Italy (at the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, the Sagra Musicale Umbra in Perugia, the Rossini Opera Festival in Pesaro, Anima Mundi in Pisa, MiTo SettembreMusica in Turin, and the Biennale Musica in Venice), the United States of America, Switzerland, and Hungary.
Among the conductors who have appeared on its podium are, among others, Claudio Abbado, Riccardo Chailly, Jesús López-Cobos, Neville Marriner, Riccardo Muti, and Jeffrey Tate. After the nearly thirty-year tenure of Andrea Mascagni, the role of Artistic Director has been held by Hubert Stuppner, Gustav Kuhn, Daniele Spini, Giorgio Battistelli, and André Comploi (from 2025).
